Leeds, in West Yorkshire, has a long history as a major commercial centre in the north of England, and remains an important economic hub to this day. Leeds’ own LGBTQ history has been influenced by its significant student population and student activism since the 1970s, radical feminist politics which gained particular urgency in the context of the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ murders between 1975 and 1980, and the anti-racist activism of the 1970s and 1980s in Leeds’ Chapeltown district.
