Queer Beyond London is a collaboration between Birkbeck College, University of London and Leeds Beckett University,, in partnership with the Raphael Samuel History Centre, to research histories of LGBTQ identities and communities in Manchester, Leeds, Plymouth, and Brighton from the 1960s to the present. Come and share your experiences of themes including family and kinship, migration and movement, activism and community building, and the uses of history.

Queer Beyond London is the first comparative project to research the impact of locality on queer histories and experiences outside the capital. It considers the local significance of famous LGBTQ landmarks, community networks, migration, gentrification and the intersection of sexual, religious, ethnic, class & gender identities and identifications. It will also gather new interviews relating to local LGBTQ communities.

We welcome a mix of people across a range of ages, gender & sexual identities, ethnic & religious backgrounds interested in Manchester’s LGBTQ past.
