Hearty congratulations from Queer Beyond London to The New Penny, Leeds on the occasion of its significance to the city’s LGBTQ history being acknowledged with a Blue Plaque.
Leeds Civic Trust and sponsors Leeds City Council announce the unveiling of a plaque, which celebrates the historic contribution made by The New Penny to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans* Community.

Deputy Leader and Leeds City Council’s LGB&T* Champion, Cllr James Lewis will unveil the plaque which reads as follows:
The New Penny
This late Victorian public house was formerly known as the Hope and Anchor. Since 1953 it has provided a safe venue for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans* community both before and following the decriminalisation of Homosexuality in 1967. Renamed The New Penny in 1975, it is one of the longest continually running LGB&T* venues in the UK.
